Save your passwords safely on an iPhone or iPad

Use Apple's built-in Passwords app so you never have to remember or write down passwords again.

A password manager remembers your passwords for you and fills them in. On an iPhone or iPad, Apple's Passwords app is built in and free.

Before you start

  • You need your Apple Account password (the one you use for the App Store).
  • Make sure your iPhone is up to date: Settings → General → Software Update.

Steps

  1. Open the Passwords app (a white key on a blue background). If you can't find it, swipe down on the home screen and type "Passwords".
  2. Unlock it with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
  3. Tap All to see passwords your iPhone has already saved.
  4. To add one, tap +, type the website (for example, the name of your email provider), your username and your password, then tap Save.
  5. Next time you log in to that website or app, your iPhone will offer to fill it in. Tap the suggestion.

Good habits

  • Let your iPhone suggest a strong password when you create a new account.
  • If the app shows a Security warning for a password, change that password.
Never share a code from the Passwords app with anyone who calls or messages you.
