Remove remote-access apps after a scam

If someone took control of your computer, disconnect and remove the app they used.

First, disconnect

Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug the internet cable. This cuts the scammer off.

Windows

  1. Click Start, type Installed apps (or Add or remove programs).
  2. Look for AnyDesk, TeamViewer, UltraViewer, Splashtop, RustDesk, ConnectWise / ScreenConnect, LogMeIn or anything you don't recognise.
  3. Click the three dots next to it and choose Uninstall.

Mac

  1. Open Finder → Applications.
  2. Drag any of the apps above to the Bin, then empty the Bin.
  3. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording and Accessibility and turn off anything you don't recognise.

Phones

Delete any app a caller asked you to install (press and hold the app, then Remove/Uninstall).

Then

  • Change your email password from a different device.
  • Call your bank using the number on your card.
  • Book a SteadyCheck session so we can check the computer properly.
