"Your internet will be cut off" calls

A caller says your internet or computer has been hacked and asks you to install an app so they can fix it.

What it looks like

A call claiming to be from Telstra, NBN or Microsoft, often with a lot of background noise.

This is the technical department. Your internet has been hacked and will be disconnected in two hours unless we fix it now.

A made-up example — not a real message, not a real link.

How to spot it

  • They called you out of the blue
  • They want you to install an app
  • They ask you to log in to your bank while they watch

What to do

  1. Hang up
  2. Never let a stranger into your computer
  3. If you gave access, turn the computer off and book a help session with us
